The Andrew and Walter Young YMCA was ground zero for some hills, chills, and a post-run nutritional refill. The Ted Corbitt Tribute Run, 8:00 am, Saturday January 28, 2023

This Saturday’s run is dedicated to Ted Corbitt, “the father of long distance running”. We’ll have a brief tribute to Ted in the circle and then set out on the pavement. We’ll enjoy the rolling hills, tranquil neighborhoods, and winter climate of SW Atlanta while being motivated and inspired by the endurance, longevity, and tenacious spirit of Ted. After using the climbs to beat back the cold we’ll reconvene at the YMCA for food, fellowship, and warmth.

ABOUT TED
The Partners, and the entire global running community, can only reach the stars because we stand on the shoulders of giants. Among that pantheon of heroes none is more significant than Ted Corbitt. The grandson of slaves, Ted was born January 31, 1919. He created a legacy in distance running both as a runner and as an organizer and advocate that is remarkable in its breath and exceptional in its depth.

He was on the US Marathon Olympic Team in 1952. His 2:26:44 marathon PR was the third fastest in the US (5:36 pace). He was crowned the US National Marathon Champion in 1954. Over a decades long career he ran more than 200 marathons and ultras, and he set numerous world and US running records. During training he logged up to 200 miles per week and even hit 300 miles once.

And when he wasn’t running he was organizing. he was a co-founder and the first president of the New York Road Runners Club, he conceived of the NYC Marathon, and he was co-founder and president of the RRCA. A physical therapist at NYU and Columbia he pioneered accurate course measurement.

Though Saturday’s Jerome Scales Southside 5K/5M was windy and cold several Partners brought the heat and set it on fire. Kudos not just to the Partners who climbed on the podium: Aazim, Shannon, Jill, Allyson, Athon, and our friends who accompanied them Jerry Brown, Angie Oneal, Charlene Parks, etc. And not just to our friends who were just barley edged off of the podium: Todd, Kerri, Katrina, etc. But a huge shout out and thanks is owed to all of the runners, the volunteers, the cheerleaders, the sponsors, the @atlantatrackclub, the Scales family, and the entire community for bringing some warmth to a chilly winter morning. Jerome’s spirit was definitely felt and motivated the participants to “find joy in the journey of running regardless of how far or how fast” ond to get it done “one mile at a time”.

The Partners have partnered with the Atlanta Track Club, @atlantatrackclub and Big Rome Running @BigRomeRUnning for our first club race of 2023 and the ATC's first stop on the 2023 Grand Prix Series.
ABOUT JEROME SCALES
Jerome Scales was a longtime member of Atlanta Track Club who served on its Board of Directors for seven years. Diagnosed with tonsil cancer in 2016, he died on June 20, 2019. Jerome was a fixture in the Atlanta running community, spreading his love for running to anyone nearby. Even after he was diagnosed, he never let the disease deter him from running or from influencing others to do the same. He adopted the motto "one mile at a time," and focused on finding joy in the journey of running regardless of how far or how fast.

Avast, ye runners! Come one, come all! Let’s ROCK and Roll into 2023! Our first Saturday run in 2023 will start at Stone Mountain High School — home of the Pirates! Also known as “The Rock”, it is the oldest high school in Dekalb County Ga. Stone Mountain High School has been serving our community for over 100 years.
There will be 3.0, 4, and 6-miles routes available which will take you through the mostly flat neighborhoods of Stone Mountain, and onto one segment of the PATH Stone Mountain Trail.
